Personal Ranger Sets the Pace in Pinehurst, NC
September 1, 2000

Chicago—The inaugural Personal RANGERÔ Pace-Of-Play invitational at the Plantation Golf Club in Pinehurst, NC was a resounding success. With a great afternoon of golf followed by a good old fashion southern Pig Pickin’, On-Course Technologies introduced the Personal RANGERÔ pace-of-play system to more than 70 PGA professionals, golf directors, GM’s, board members, and course owners representing more than 40 area facilities.

The tournament, a two-ball best ball format finished in an average time of 4:03 on the challenging Plantation Club course, a Personal Ranger partner course for several months. While On-Course does not advocate the elimination of marshals, there were no marshals on the course for this event leaving only the Personal Ranger to guide the pace and prove its effectiveness.

Attendees were surveyed after the round with the following significant results:

  • 98% felt that slow play is a major issue in golf today
  • 94% felt golf courses need to take a more proactive approach to managing pace
  • 91% felt that golfers are more likely to play at a course known for a better pace
  • over 90% of the respondents agreed or strongly agreed that the Personal Ranger had a well thought-out design, was non-threatening, easy to understand, and effective at raising the awareness to pace without compromising the integrity of golf
  • over 90% indicated that they would recommend the Personal Ranger to a peer

On-Course now has more than 20 facilities nationwide with the system fully installed and has a target of 50 facilities by the end of the first quarter, 2001. Co-founder and head of Sales and Marketing Scott Grundberg said, “We were very pleased with the turnout and results of this event. It reinforced our belief that once you experience the simplicity of this tool, you realize how impactful it can be as the foundation of an effective pace policy. Everybody wins with the Personal Ranger; course management relating to pace is easier, the average pace definitely improves, and the golfing experience is enhanced.” Polling of existing Personal Ranger customer’s shows an average pace improvement of 15-20 minutes combined with an improvement in the experience level.

The patented Personal Ranger is a small electronic device with a LCD screen that displays the golfer’s elapsed time and where they should be on the course at all times based on the courses’ pace of play goals. It is designed to be the cornerstone of an effective pace-of-play policy. On-Course Technologies is a privately held company established in 1995.
