How it Works - Personal Ranger Improves Pace of Play!

Based on your pace-of-play goals, the Personal Ranger keeps your golfers continuously informed of their elapsed time and exactly where they should be on the course at all times.

The system is easily configurable for all starting formats including double-tee starts, shotgun starts, and 9-hole rounds. It even works great for starter-less facilities.

System Setup
The entire Personal Ranger system can be setup in less than 1 day with one individual and as little as a half day with a 2 people. The system consists of 3 primary components:

  1. A simple PC software package for entering and maintaining your baselines or the total time you want to each group to play the course for each type of occasion broken down by tee fairway and green.. (10 minutes to install, 30 minutes to configure)
  2. A Palm Pilot for programming and starting the Personal Rangers. (10 minutes to install)
  3. Personal Rangers for every cart or walking group. (3-6 hours to install and program)

Complete details on setup and installation can be found in the Users Manual under Support.

Baseline Configurations
Once your Palm Pilot and PC software are installed, you need to configure your baselines.
We recommend the following as a general rule-of-thumb:

Tee  Fairway  Green

  - 3 minutes for par 4’s and 5’s

  - 4 minutes for par 3’s

  - 6 minutes for a par 4

  - 9 minutes for a par 5

  - 4 minutes for par 4’s and 5’s

  - 6 minutes for par 3’s

Obviously, you will need to make fine tuning adjustments based on the specifics of your course. For example, you may want to add a minute extra on the first tee and 5 minutes at the turn for a quick food stop. You may want to add a couple minutes to the harder holes and remove some time from the easier ones.

On a course with 10 par 4’s, 4 par 3’s and 4 par 5’s, following the above guideline, this should total about 4 hours. You need to determine the time that’s reasonable for your course. Realistically, you may be a 4 hour course some of the time and a 4:30 minute course at other times depending on conditions and clientele. With the Personal Ranger, you can decide the pace on the tee box with no added effort. You can have access to up to 10 different baselines available on your Palm Pilot at any time.”

The sample below illustrates how a four-hour round is broken into segments for programming the Personal Ranger.

Once your baselines are setup, a single button press on the Palm Pilot cradle transfers the baselines to the Palm Pilot and you are ready to program the Personal Rangers. The Palm Pilot communicates with the Personal Rangers via infra-red, similar to the way you use your remote control to change the channels on your TV. With the press of a single button on the Palm Pilot, you program your Personal Rangers with your most common baseline.

The Personal Ranger system is now ready for action. See Ease of Use for details on daily use of the Personal Ranger and see Pace Aware for details on how to incorporate the Personal Ranger into your overall pace-of-play policy.
